An average book has somewhere between 70,000 and 120,000 words. Since 2020, The Global Tiller has published roughly 150,000.
If you had asked us two years ago to write a book, we would have probably scoffed. But small steps really do have a way of piling up, and here we are — celebrating our 100th issue!
The Global Tiller is really a passion project for the both of us. It’s a way for us to make sense of what’s going on and declutter the news. It’s a way for us to reflect on what’s changing around the world and figuring out how it impacts us, not just two individuals living on a beautiful island but global citizens who are impacted by global trends just as much as someone living on a bustling continent.
Often our work lives and professional commitments get in the way of taking a step back and paying attention to what’s happening around us. The 9-to-5 grind can numb our brains so much that we hardly have any time left to think about the big picture, to know where we stand in the midst of a changing world.
Yet, it’s important to know what’s happening, not only in the area of your professional interest but generally as well. Be it technological developments, sustainable growth, climate change, Covid-19 or a global awareness of the sheer inequality perpetuated by our current systems — each and every one of these signals of change impacts our personal and professional existence.
What we try to do with The Global Tiller is to give you information on the latest developments in these and many other areas but also bring together a diversity of perspectives so that you can reflect on where you stand. We don’t always expect you to agree with us, nor do we claim to be subject matter experts on the topics we cover.
In fact, we admit we are a small fish in a big pond. You’ll find a hundred media outlets and then some more talking about any of our weekly themes. Yet, we try to offer a perspective on those themes that often tends to be framed by the point-of-view of the mainstream (or, the mainland). We try our best to conduct thorough research and offer deep questions that helps us, and you, think differently and critically.
As we mark an important milestone in this journey, we want to hear from you, our readers. We want to make this newsletter more than a one-way communication or just another post making noise in an echo chamber where it’s hard to listen to anyone. What we’re trying to do is spark conversations that help us all grow and learn together.
So if we appreciate that you take seven minutes of your time every week to read the newsletter, we would also appreciate if you took just two minutes of your time this week to let us know:
How does The Global Tiller help you learn what’s going on?
Where do you think this newsletter can improve?
Which topics do you want us to focus on?
We didn’t want to send a formal survey but we would grateful if you could reply to this email or leave a comment below this post to give us your feedback. Some of you have written back in the past to let us know how a particular theme sparked your curiosity, and we’d love to hear from more of you.
Until next week, take care and stay safe.
